Split file-sharing decision from Turku |
Thursday, 26 October 2006 |
Turku district court gave today its decision in the Finreactor-series. Turre defended a total of 8 individuals in Turku who were charged for the administration of a BitTorrent tracker-site. 4 of the accused were released from all charges. Another 4 were convicted for copyright infringement to joint liability together with 17 others. The convicted were ordered to pay over 400 000 euros in compensation to right holders. They disagree with the convictions and will appeal. It is indeed questionable whether a third party (administrator) can be indirectly liable for the actions of individual file sharers according to Finnish copyright law. |

Software companies using open source components need to be aware of e.g. potential licensing, patent and copyright infringement risks. Our partners have advised a growing number of clients in these issues and both lectured and published on the topic. |
